Testing out the 3 mobile broadband service

Finally got the chance to give the 3 USB modem a good test run. I am blogging this via 3's mobile broadband service.

I shut of the wireless network in my house and used the dongle to connect to the net.

3 dongle

The first thing I did was to check the connection speed. Here are the results according to Speedtest.net:

The speeds are nothing to boast about but I look at the possibilities - it's amazing to think that I can access the net from almost anywhere in the UK. According to the 3 website, their "network covers 86% of the UK population."

Found this old picture of my son (3.2 MB) in my computer. Uploading it to my Flickr page took around 10 minutes.

Next test area: Nottingham.

Very good site man. I have a 3 band connection by cel phone, and it is not do stable as a connection wireless, but it helps a lot if you are traveling!

The down speed is ok but why the upload speed is not good enough?? It should be about half of the down speed.

That is pretty cool Adam, I hope that we can get that kind of coverage even in metro like Chicago! As far as the upload speed, it does seem a bit on the slow side...10 minutes for 3MB upload to flickr...hmmmm
Anyway, just drop by to say what up, keep up great work, take care!

What a wonderful speed.
Can it apply in PDA phone or something etc?
And why the upload speed comparing to the download speed is so low?

Thanks for all your comments guys. Usually the download speed is faster than the upload speed but not sure why it is much lower in this case.

Mobile broadband.I hope people will get more facility from it.

it's quite slow but being able to blog almost anywhere is cool!

hmm... not bad but the main prob that I feel is there is a limit of the speed. If I need more speed then I can't expand the limit.

10 minutes to upload a picture? Well, I think that is a bit slow but then 3.2MB sounds a lot. Anyway it's nice that you try it out and then review about it.

the speed is quite ok. but think again, online anywhere. That is something that can be proud of.

Ok call this spam if you want but your kid is cute! Anyways i was curious what is the difference between the "3 band" service you speak of and what is normally used by mobile internet providers now. Or are they the same?

Hi Jorge: I will let you off for the moment ;-)
I am not talking about "3 band". The 3 in the post refers to the Hutchison 3G UK Limited, a mobile service provider in the UK.
