55th most popular blog in Malaysia

Syed Syahrul Zarizi has compiled a list of the 99 most popular blogs in Malaysia. Initially the list only consisted of the 70 most popular blogs.

It comes as no surprise that the #1 and #2 blogs are Paul Tan's and Kenny Sia's blogs respectively. My personal blog ah ok lah is at #55. However, he has missed this blog. With it's Alexa ranking of 336,472, it should come at #62.

Is Google going to get rid of page rank?

At first I thought it was impossible but after going through all the rumours on various blogs as well as discussion groups, I am seriously wondering whether Google is actually getting rid of the page rank (PR) system. Read Goodbye Google PageRank? and Rumors about Google doing away with Pagerank?.

Doing away with page rank would be a serious blow to various companies specialising in customer generated advertising. This includes PayPerPost, Review Me, Sponsored reviews and a host of others, as they all use PR as a means of ranking blogs that are registered with them. The higher the PR of your blog, the more higher paying opportunities you get.

If that ever happens - I mean In the absence of Google PR, I guess they would have to come up with alternative ways to rank blogs. Despite criticisms about it's accuracy, Alexa is already used by several companies and might become the default blog ranking system.

Another option is of course, the Technorati blog authority, the blog search engine or in their words,
the recognized authority on what's happening on the World Live Web.

The hugely popular, The Truth Laid Bear ecosystem may be another option. Said to be the "definitive weblog ranking system". According to their website,
TTLB receives an average of 1,535 visits and 3,846 page views per day.

Selling my Domain name

I had someone ask me quite recently whether I would be interested in selling my domain name and my price. I asked him to make an offer but I haven't received a reply as yet.

To tell the truth, I have never considered selling off my domain name. I own and have owned numerous domain names but I have never made money selling one.

Coming back to my blog, it now has a Google PR 2 and Alexa rank of 235,820. Both are improving gradually. It also has a Technorati rank of 24,745 and authority: 194. All the info here are correct as of 26 August 2007. However, I have no idea how much it's worth.

According to Dane Carlson's "How Much Is Your Blog Worth?" applet, my blog adamok.net, is worth $109,520.76.

My blog is worth $109,520.76.

I don't sincerely think that's it's worth that much and I may sell my domain name, if the right price comes along.

SEO Expert

Just ran the search terms on Google for "SEO Expert" to see which sites are in the top 5 positions.

They are as follows:

1. Bradfallon.com
This is the blog of Brad Fallon, CEO of Smart Marketing, Inc. It was started in December 2003.
The site has PR = 5 and Alexa rank = 57,411.
The site is also #1 for coolest "guy on the planet".

2. Seo-expert-services.co.uk
Website of SEO Expert Services, a company which was just started last year. Their principal consultant is David Viney.
The site has PR = 4 and Alexa rank = 288,262.

3. Mrwebguru.com
This is the website of Robert Wright. The site was launched in 2001. The oldest among the top 3 in the list.
The site has PR = 5 and Alexa rank = 469,627.

4. Misterweb.co.uk
Website of Misterweb. Not much info about the people behind the site.
Google PR = 4 and Alexa = 212,276
The site is also #1 for SEO UK.

5. Seoexpert.ws
Website of Kevin S. Kantola. Not much info other than that.
Google PR = 4 and Alexa rank = 1,070,089

In comparison my blog which was launched in February 10 this year, is now #10 on Google for the same search term. The Google PR = 2 and Alexa rank = 292,708. This mean that I have better Alexa rankings than the sites on either #3 and #5 positions.

I will be truly happy when I can break into the elite top 5 positions.

Alexa rankings

All this while I have been concentrating a lot on improving my Google page rank. I do realise that Alexa rankings are equally if not more important too. Right now the Alexa rankings of this blog is not that impressive: 461,677.

Unlike Google page rank where we aspire to reach PR 10, it the opposite for Alexa rankings. Here the lower the Alexa rank, the better.

If you are a newbie to this, just check out what they have to say about 'Alexa Traffic Rankings' on the Alexa site.

Though a lot of critics say that it not a true indicator of web traffic to a site, Alexa rankings are still used by many sites for the same - this includes a number of online advertising companies.

if you are looking to improve (lower) your blogs' Alexa rankings, you might want to read Dosh Dosh's '20 Quick Ways to Increase Your Alexa Rank'.

I have already taken some of the steps listed there including putting up the Alexa rank widget on the sidebar and also have Firefox’s SearchStatus add-on installed.

Let's see how it goes from here.
